About

Wed Abduljawad is a Saudi-American photographer from the city of Jeddah, just off the Red Sea. Her interest in photography began in her early teens. She pursued her undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon and her graduate degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States. After completing her studies, she returned to Jeddah and taught photography at Dar Alhekma University. She participated in a multi-artist project titled “My Father’s House” that was commissioned by the British Council. The exhibition toured major cities in the Middle East, making its last stop in London. Depicted in her photography were historic houses and remnants of the old city walls in the historic district of Jeddah. Her photography in the exhibit displayed the use of an older technique of photography called “Pin Hole photography” and this caught the attention of art critics and photographers in the region. Her work and style from that project paved the way for other commissioned work by the Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Culture. A multi-artist project titled “Recreational Purpose”, the exhibition included the work of one photographer representing each of the gulf countries. The images Wed produced depicts the contrast and harmony of modern and older architecture stemming from different influences.  Currently, Ms. Abduljawad resides in Los Angeles, California with her husband and daughter where she teaches high school photography at Lynwood High School.
